Research into childhood sport and exercise strongly indicates that confidence developed in sport carries over into other aspects of daily life.  Children that try hard at sport and see the rewards of practice will build up confidence and mental stamina.  As this develops they begin to see that difficult tasks are challenges to be mastered not threats to be avoided.  In the face of failure they persist, try again and practice more as they work towards mastering a skill and not just packing it in.  These are essential life skills and we believe that all it takes is a little persuasion for kids to give sport a chance.  The UrbanSquash inner city project aims to put these principles into practice by introducing kids to the fabulous game of squash.  By learning squash we believe the kids will see that a little persistence pays off and that they can build up their confidence to take on other challenges like tricky homework problems.

A typical UrbanSquash after-school session comprises of about 45 minutes of squash coaching and with the feeling of confidence about their new found enjoyment of a simple game still fresh in their mind they have 45 minutes of quiet homework time.  We believe that success in sport and study are strongly related which has been demonstrated by many of the programs in the US which have had extraordinary results.  Most importantly of all, we hope that the kids will enjoy the program so much that they come back again the following week.
